CRAVING FOR CANTONESE COOKING SATISFIED AT PAUL WONG'SOff The Eaten Track - Lori LockeryScarborough Mirror Weekender - Jan. 16, 2005 - www.insidetoronto.comCravings. Is there any rhyme or reason for them? Scientists say yes. Certain foods may even trigger the desire to eat more, so perhaps that is where the notion comes from that everyone gets hungry again right after eating Chinese food. Cravings were what brought us to Paul Wong's just over the eastern border of Scarborough. We were looking forward to a good feed of Cantonese food and we weren't disappointed. Early on a Sunday evening, we had the full attention of the chef. Egg rolls ($1.40) were fried to a golden turn and were served with homemade plum sauce and a mustard sauce with a heat quotient of a blast furnace. A ceramic pot of warm saké went wonderfully. We moved on to the delicious entrées. Stuffed shrimp with a sumptuous mushroom sauce were Lillian's pick for best dish of the meal. The crisp shrimp married beautifully with the richness of the sauce ($15.50). Orange beef was slightly sweet and citrusy, with a bright chili undertone ($10.80). Ginger chicken ($11.50), with a perfect bite of piquancy paired well. One bowl of steamed rice ($1.70) was enough for the three of us and it would be unthinkable not to pair the neutral flavour of this international starch with the spicy dishes we ordered. On the veggie front, a plate of fragrant snow peas ($7.95) stir-fried to a crisp finish completed our well-rounded meal. I didn't experience the two-hour after "I'm hungry again" syndrome, but I sure had my craving re-fire the next day when I spotted the leftovers in the fridge.
